Oh that's awful. What a loss.

I think in these days of energy concerns that canning takes on more import. If you make a very fruit heavy jam, then it's good to use to make puddings like crumble I find, and it keeps for years in the jars, if they're well sealed, without going off too.

Just one more thing, and I'll have had my run of three, I'll be fine for the rest of the year..brace..brace........ 😀

I have ranted about this before.

American Youtube preppers are eejits.

There are NO cases of botulism from ordinary jam making in the UK, and I can't find any in Europe either.
62 cases of botulism since 1922.....and yes, that date's right.... and in 1922 the cause was Duck Pate.

It's totally mince.

The only recent cases of botulism in the UK were from canned meat, and in every case it was meat canned outside the UK....Polish, USA, etc., not British.

1922 8 Duck pâté A
1932 2 Rabbit and pigeon broth
1934 1 Jugged hare
1935 5 Vegetarian nut brawn
1935 1 Minced meat pie
1949 5 Macaroni cheese
1955 2 Pickled fish (Mauritius)
1978 4 Canned salmon (USA)
1987 1 Rice and vegetable shelf stable airline meal
1989 1 Hazelnut yoghurt
1998 2 Bottled mushrooms (Italy)
2003 1 Sausage (Poland)
2004 1 Hummus NK
2004 1 Source not known but returned from travelling in Georgia
2005 1 (0) Yes Home-preserved pork (Poland) B

The only other known cause is heroin injection.

Nowhere is Jam ever a cause of botulism.
You're more likely to get a hangover if your jam goes off.

Mould on bread, on cheese or on jam can just be removed and the rest of the food eaten without getting upset guts or poisoning.

Rant over. I'll go and be good.

Or turn it into booze

That's a proper pain losing a ton of fruit like that. Not so much the cost or labour, just the pure loss and the irritation it brings

I buy a lot of fruit cheap in the supermarkets - especially blueberries - just in the days it is about to turn and the price halves. Freeze it in ziplocs

Though bear this in mind - https://www.comparethemarket.com/energy/content/which-appliances-use-the-most-energy/

I should really learn to fish properly but don't have the gear or know-how.

Christ, yes. Where you are? It's criminal not to. Like using up someone else's go :) If it's anything like I remember, there's bass on the rocks and mackerel all over. At least try chucking out a handline with some feathers on it and leave it overnight.

Later you can look for excuses to drop acceptable loot on rock rods and multipliers or expensive salt fly rigs

Remember not to fish anywhere Southern water has a river

I guess I'm lucky realy, my friend lost a freezers worth of food, whereas I lost just my fruit, which I shared with her for use of the freezer, as mine is tiny.
Not a great thing to come home to after her 4 month trip to N Z.
It was a big freezer too, so a fair bit of money lost there, not good in this day and age.

Is she not covered under her household insurance ? I know it's part of my policy. I think there's a £50 excess though.

When we lived in the Bahamas, freezer parties were a regular feature of social life. The electicity supply was very dodgy and after a long power cut, friends neighbours were invited to a barbecue of freezer contents and the cost covered by the insurance.

No idea, we had so much to talk about!
I've texted her anyway with the suggestion. I'm sure it will get sorted.
