the beautiful south. but NOT on the island
The MOTO spokesman for motorway service stations was asked why the recharging points on motorways often didn't work. He said because there is insufficient capacity in the National Grid to power them. They draw an huge voltage to charge a car which is equivalent to 25% of the use of the service station per charger.
Having spoken to a man who went to Donnington to watch a motor event last week , he said the friend who took him chose to take his EV rather than his range rover. They had to be 'recovered ' at Oxford as every charger they stoppped at didn't work. It appears the National Grid can't handle electric vehicle rechargers so the problem isn't the lack of chargers its another case of under investment in infrastructure. The Grid is a ftse 100 company on the stock exchange privatised to make the 1% richer.
We are doomed to die from fossil fuels.

Current legislation means you need to have a smart charger fitted which will only charge if there is sufficient power available on the grid.

So say you are out all day then put your car on charge and need to rush out a couple of hours later only to find it hasnt charged because the grid is stretched with everyone cooking, watching telly etc.

My car is getting old, and I'm beginning to think about another, looking at others.
Normally I don't notice cars much. I genuinely think of them as three piece suites in a tin can on wheels that gets me reliably from A to B and back again. Makes don't bother me, just reliability at a reasonable price.

Should I go electric ? for all the driving I do now, no reason not to; except that it's not easy to find reliable charging points, not without me having to walk or wait hours. There are neighbours having the charging points fitted in their driveways, but it's both expensive and a mess of digging up footpaths and the like to get the connections in.

Honestly, just now, it's not worth the bother. I'm sure it's better for the environment, etc., but the logistics aren't sorted out well enough for folks like me to make it a simple change.

Power and charging problems are only going to get worse as more people make the move over to electric vehicles.

I dont personally see it as a viable option yet, we need massive infrastructure and power generation first. Wouldnt surprise me if Rishi and his chums force through more windfarms in protected areas to offset the aggro over North Sea drilling permits.

The sparky rewiring our work building has said 2 of his suppliers no longer supply chargers as they arent worth the hassle of stocking as no one is buying them and for most of them, the household supply isnt up to running them. He expects the gov to fold on the 2030 deadline and extend fossil fuels until the national grid has caught up.

This whole EV thing is a bit reminiscent of the DAB radio farce that never really got off the ground despite immense hype, threats and pressure to adopt.
Hence my radio in the van. We had intermittent 4G for ages, what good is DAB unless there’s internet? Even digital tuning pisses me off, I need a tuning dial.

I have DAB radios in the car and house and generally find them okay. The annoying bit is the delay that is inherent in the broadcasts. BBC Scotland broadcast different shows on different media so I have to swap back and forth between FM and DAB at times.

Met a defunct electric car blocking the mini roundabout into Midhurst. And it’s Glorious Goodwood week.

Offered to help push it out the way but you can’t push them apparently. Or not this one. I suggested we haul it with the Hilux in front of me and they looked horrified, saying it might damage it. WTF!

Weirdly, unless it is part of some elaborate AI prank on gullible hoomans, the internet says it's true.

It’s not a capacity problem on a national level, it’s supplying it locally. We are using less power than we used to and the grid is positive about its capacity for electric charging - particularly as the flow will go both ways.

3 pin charging works for a lot of people. EV adopters often find fast charging is not as important as they thought it would be because they charge at home and the car is always full, if you’re doing typical UK driving you don’t need more than that.

If they dont have a neutral pushing can generate electricity in the motors.
Things like mobility scootets or ride on floor scrubbers usually have a manual disconnect so you can push them without causing a problem.

Just Googled, it can bugger up an E because the turning wheels are pushing current to a battery which is off and a lot of magic devices could be fried.

I use a tecsun pl660 multi band radio but it dunt half eat batteries.
Supposed to be brilliant, Tecsun. I nearly bought a 365 or 368. Identical to the County Comm survival kit AM/FM radios, exactly the same according to the radio people on the internet. God, they do go into some detail that lot, and I thought Jamies were boring…;)
