I think the Emeritus pope realised that he wasn't the man to tackle the whole mess of the abuse by clergy, the mess in the Vatican, etc., that it needed a younger man, and in humility and with prayer took a step back.
It says a lot for both him and his successor that they seemed to get on without conflict, but with respect and what looked like genuine regard.
It always seemed rather dignified.
But then, I'm a good Scots Presbyterian atheist :giggle: how would I know ?
