You know that idea that we're only so many steps removed from anybody on the planet ?
Well, we live on islands here. Two great big ones and a wheen of smaller ones, from the Shetlands and Orkneys to the Isle of Wight.

Theoretically, could we do a meet up chain of people among ourselves ? and how far would anyone have to travel to meet another one of us ? and what sort of time frame would it take ?

Discounting Kev and Sean, I mean :D it's taken them years to pass along some fishing kit.

I have the M74, the M8 and the M9/A9 in very reasonable distance.

Who else is on that network ?

I do travel to York, but it's a long way. Sort of three ordinary travel distances down for me.

So, anyone around an hour of either of us ?

I did wonder if it were do-able.

We used to do chains like this to shift kit on t'other side, well up here we did, with occasional forays down to the Lakes, Yorkshire and the like.

I just thought that if we had an ad hoc kind of network we could pass stuff along like that. I have a workshop needing cleared, I have too much kit, too many books, that kind of thing, and I know I'm not alone. Besides, there's booze and jam, and occasionally a glut of something or other too.

I think my nearest person would be Southampton, unless anyone else is nearer to the south west than that.
I do feel a bit out on a limb in the boonies here on the edge of exmoor.
Wish sometimes I was more central, but I like the South West too much.
It's a great idea tho Mary.

I think I'm probably nearest to Marc down at the lorry park end of Kent, and Rich the other way?
Top of the M25/M20/M26 triangle.

We used to run a transport chain on the Toyota Surf forum - the Surf Train - for moving heavier bits and pieces around the country.
I think the biggest item that got moved was a gearbox from the Southwest up to Middlesbrough.
Shame that place got bought by someone who just wanted to make money from it.

Mojo is in Glasgow I believe. I messaged him that we were here because he never posted, although he created his account

John's out in Wales. He travels up past me to go to the ferry to get across to Orkney.

Is it my imagination, or is there someone on rof near Exeter, or is that the other place? I rarely check where people are based, so I can't rightly remember.

Bushwacker is just up the road a bit, ElThomsono is 1hr 30, WG is 3hr30, Kev is just south, Mark is about 2hrs.

But I honestly think expecting to use any of these members as part of a courier system would be a dreadful mistake. 😁

I liked meeting up with folks on occasion. A jaunt somewhere new, have a walkabout with someone in an area i didn't know. Pass along 'good things', pick up 'good things', pass them along. Books, knives, stoves, the makings for stuff, it all slowly worked it's way around.

It is slowly picking up again as folks plan. Walks, canoe day/weekends, forage trips, that kind of thing.

I just wondered if it were something that might be of interest here too.

Is there anyone in the middle bit between Aberdeen and the Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling kind of area ?
