Munched up Beroul’s Tristan again. Then Josefine Quinn’s In Search of the Phoenicians. Straightforwardly academic but totally excellent in all ways.

Reading "Bewildered" by Laura Waters. It is all about her walking New Zealand’s Te Araroa track.

Yesterday in the co op I saw sepulchre in paperback by James Herbert, must be twenty years since I read it. Picked it up from the borrow box, finished it about one o'clock in the morning. Knackered now.

Chickenhawk.

I read it years ago, but got it on Kindle for 99p. It's a genuinely amazing book....
If you don't know it's the story of a helicopter pilot in the early days of the Vietnam war. It was a bestseller when it came out,and still holds up today

It is a good one. Never did find a follow-up with what happened after he came home.

I read the first act of Death of a Salesman last night, it's decent; so far it hasn't outright stated that we need to have UBI to combat the ills of capitalism but I suspect it's what Miller was getting at.

I'm onto Weymouth Bound, a book written by one of the guys in our mechanical design department. When he was a youth he and his father built a ship and sailed it across the Atlantic; at one point they met a US warship and held up a sign with a message for his mother, apparently they got the news to her within the hour.

It's actually a really good read, I'm very impressed by his varied skillset, it's a out a young lad that goes to sea on a sailing ship, with tales of great adventure. Ah-harr!

I have been busy reading since I bought my new Kobo (free to borrow eBooks from the local library via Libby/Overdrive/BorrowBox)...

At the moment I am reading The Second Sleep by Robert Harris.

I have also read: -

The Kremlin Letter by Noel Behn
The Last Hostage by John J Nance
Watching the Bodies by Graham Smith
Escape to Perdition by James Silvester
Hold Fast by JH Gelernter
The Yards by AF Carter
Final Approach by John J Nance
Agent in Berlin by Alex Gerlis

I have the Kobo Sage. I don't think that I could recommend it for a number of reasons.

Because it’s over £250 would be my primary reason not to recommend it

Reading ‘Existence’ by David Brin. AI, Fermi Paradox etc. Not my usual but quite good, very well imagined.
Yes, it's not cheap, but if it was a torch you would have considered it cheap :D

I was spending a fair amount on books then giving them away with free postage, so I decided that the Kobo would be a better bet, especially after looking at the price of the Boox eReader. Also, my Kindle Paperwhite's battery was failing, my second Paperwhite. I hate these disposable -when the battery fails- devices, but sometimes there is little choice.

The greatest annoyance with the Kobo is having to almost take the Kobo cover completely off to be able to switch the device back on when it has powered off. It would not have been that hard to have manufactured a hole in the back of the cover so that the power button could be accessed. A positive is that you can take notes on the device, but you have to buy the expensive stylus that runs on AAAA (yes, 4A) batteries. I bought both versions of the Apple stylus and never used them. With the Kobo stylus I have only drawn a comedy cartoon penis. What else would you expect from me? :shame:

I think the paperwhites were generally more problematic. The original kindles had more robust screens (technologically not just physically).

Books tend not have white pages either!

We took a load of DVDs and the like to CEX years ago and traded them for an early Kindle; it's decent, but I prefer to read an actual book. It's more demanding, if that makes sense. My mind would wander too much if I was just clicking through and the choice would overwhelm me.

A hardback calls with "c'mon Steve, put your phone down and read quietly, it's relaxing" 😅

A couple of the authors I read occasionally publish Novellas (quarter of the content for almost the price of a full book.) so i buy them cheap and read on the kindle.

Main problem is that i end up flicking the page over when im about 2 thirds of the way down expecting it scroll like a tablet :fp:

Kindle app on the 12.9 Pro is superb. The van life thing forced me to up to the 12.9, it’s great for films and media. Just a whole lot easier for everything. Just added an ESR Ascend keyboard, absolute game changer. I got fed up with compromising, hence the 12 Mini phone and big iPad.

I dare say your eldest is using his for more than films and actually utilizing the thing, some of the drawing and note apps are superb. Balls to Apple Pencil though, I bought a Zagg Stylus and it does pretty much everything the Apple Pencil does. Your lad will know this, but porn is much better on the larger screen ;) :D
