Our downstairs loo cistern is china, and it's cold, and it gets wet with condensation....it sits against the outside wall and there's no heating in there.

I'm giving serious thought to ripping it out and fitting an insulated concealed cistern instead. But, if I'm going to go to all that bother, I thought I'd maybe see about fitting a bidet type toilet while I was at it.

Well, that opened Pandora's box  Searching online brings up a positive flood of options.
I don't know where to start !
I know that I don't want the muslim type shatoof thing, I'd rather it was integrated. It's a tiny wee loo, I can only imagine the mess with a shower/hose in it.
But I don't fancy spending three grand to buy and have one of the Japanese style ones fitted either, though, even if it is heated.
I'd need an electrician too for those, though there is an accessible socket within a couple of metres.....but what happens in a power cut ?

Does anyone have a bidet toilet that they'd recommend ? that's actually worth the bother of the hassle of fitting ?

Wetwipes are more convenient - or one of those big sponges you might use to wash the car with :) Not as architecturally pleasing perhaps.

I wonder what a discussion of bidets would be like on BCUK

I have always felt that it shouldn't be allowed to build a house without bidets in every room with a toilet. My house is small and belongs to the local authority so I haven't got a shower let alone a bidet. I use wet wipes, disposing of them properly in a bin then into the black bag waste stream. It's a waste, but the best route to hygiene that I have.

I stayed overnight at my partner's house recently. She has a flat roof extension on her house that provides a utilty room, a uopboard for the hot water tank and a toilet. It is unheated, and nipping to the loo for a pee in the early hours wearing a T-shirt and boxers, meant that I was shivering mid-pee so badly it was more shaking than shivering. You have my sympathy MaC.

There are wet wipes (whole other discussion, I buy 'green' that has no plastic, that does break up, etc.,) at hand in both loos, but to have the loo do the whole wash and dry thing (Japanese style, and expensive) or one that is just a quick wash, and dry off with paper towels has an appeal.

Anyone I know with a bidet lives in one of the big sandstone villas and their bathrooms are huge enormous Victorian things, so more than ample room for seperate bath, shower, toilet, two sinks and a seperate bidet.
I don't have room for that style. I need something much more compact.

There's a reason I refuse to eat Lavender biscuits.....my loo smells of lavender :) To me it's a cleaning herb, not an eating or drinking herb.

The vinegar on a sponge on a stick.....y'know ? maybe that's why the Italians don't do pickles like ours....

I have a simple one and would definitely recommend it. Mine is a non-electric one, takes water from the same line as the cistern. Obviously not heated, and no dryer which the electric ones have.

The basic non-electric ones are cheap and easy to fit. Maybe start there and see if you get on with it? The seat mounted fully electric ones are very tempting and not that expensive if you wanted to upgrade but not get the full base unit.

I'm a convert! No contest at all compared to wet wipes.

Right now our water in the cistern is about 3˚C. It comes straight down from the Daer Reservoir up on the Lanark moors. The Southern Uplands really. It's high up there and perishing cold.....even in Summer, like this photo.

I think that could be an awful shock to the system, iimmc ?
Being clean has a great appeal, but being warm and clean kinds of wins hands down.

Warm water would be nice for sure, but having cold hasn't ever stopped me using it. You can get non-electric ones that mix from tap feeds.

Looks like ones similar to mine can be had for about 25 quid on Amazon.

You do realise Mary that against all odds you have some of us trying to stop you from getting what you really need and want: A separate bidet with hot and warm water is cheap but you probably don't have the space; any other solution other than the Japanese one or the Statu Quo mean cold water all year, and the novelty will wear off very quickly. Even if you managed to get hot water from your hot tank it would take a while to get to you. So find the most cost effective way but go for the Japanese option. You'll forget about the price quickly.

I'd just want to be a fly on the wall in your neighbourhood when the jealous locals will talk about it... until they make any excuse to find a way to give them a try

You don't need to get the full 3k base unit. For 3-400 you can get seat mounted electric options with a heated tank, dryer, heated seat and so on.

Lots of options on Amazon UK - https://www.amazon.co.uk/VOVO-STYLE...zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&smid=A24FKCARFNQV9U&th=1

I think Korean made ones are considered the ones to go for.

Oh me too :)

Actually, I reckon the menfolks would be as well.....I mean, think of it.....a warm loo, a nice clean refreshing warm water wash, and blow dry as well :)

I don't see a downside to this.

I'm all for the warm wash and blow dry, but could be hard on his knees and a bugger if the lid comes down on the back of his neck...

I tell you what, having kids and wiping their arses with toilet paper when they're in full view, it lets you know how shoddy a job it does.

We used cotton wool and baby lotion.....did the job nicely.
They kids took it ill out when they graduated to toilet paper and DIY, so eventually I bought wipes.

Makes you wonder about the past sometimes. The old folks said they just went up the hill and used moss.

Surprisingly effective, and if you pick it clean of anything else first, comfortable to use is moss.

Unlike the Izal, which really did damned all at either absorbing or cleaning.
Newspaper is supposed to be fairly good if inclined to leave black smudges :dunno:

Wet wipes aren't anywhere near as good as a bidet IMO, even a cheapy cold water one like mine.
