I've started on these new logs, and I'm struggling to burn the bastards. I've split a few and checked the moisture content and it's through the roof!

Some were nearly passable but none were under 20%, the exact figure isn't certain as I don't fully trust this meter and it has four setting for various types of wood but I'm certain they're wet. It's from a reputable firm, they say they're barn dried and as signed up to Ready to Burn certification; this in itself has some complexity to it but Christ.

The cherry I seasoned myself was coming out closer to 14%, and it's like night and day in the fire.

I'm going to have to call the bastards in the morning and deal with this bullshit, but in the meantime I've a shed full of substandard wood that'll need removing, restacking, and drying for a sodding year 🤦‍♀️

the beautiful south. but NOT on the island
All wood burns if you get the fire hot enough before you put it on. You should embrace the fact it will keep the stove going slower before the cold weather arrives by which time it will probs have dried a fair bit and will burn faster than you want it to.

I had this problem a couple of years back, a lot of mould to deal with. I got a top up load from another local and he was disgusted and angry. People are paying through the nose for kiln dried wood he says, and his logs are as dry as any kiln dried wood.

Right, well I called them and they only just sent a guy today to inspect the product. He didn't bring a moisture meter and I didn't force the issue as I got the impression I'd have to explain to him that lower numbers were better. In fairness they offered to lift the lot and refund me, or the guy had eight net bags of logs with him that I could have instead. Couldn't be arsed with the faff so I've a load more logs, and they're burning well.

In any case, it's had me working from home at the quietest time of year for us so I've managed a few errands around all this; a trip to Waitrose for a couple of fancy beers for my sister's husband, and a trip to a local independent motor factors for bearing grease and brake cleaner, plus the pharmacy. Fortunately I'd recovered my other car this morning or I'd have been humped.
