Since his last ventile jacket went to be cut apart for sound bits by Mr Fenna, Himself has occasionally looked at ventile.
It's a ridiculous price though for what is just a cotton jacket.

On t'other side there's a thread on weird and interesting bargains we've spotted, and the link went up for ventile jackets in a good blue colour for £20 delivered.
Needless to say I went for a nosey, and the second size up was a couple of pounds more, but still well worth the money :)
We'll see what it's like when it arrives, but just in case anyone else is interested,

He eats well :) he eats very well.
He is just really, really active and burns it off.
The man can eat an entire box of chocolates in a couple of days.....I'm still trying to work my way through my Christmas ones, I keep palming them off to him and Son2.
I like a sweetie, but one is ample. I'd rather have fruit....and I'm the one who's fat :sigh:

Himself sort of has.

It's not like any ventile fabric I have ever handled before. It's almost like a light canvas.
Nice discrete colour though; blue/grey that blends in well in the woods, fields, watery areas kind of thing.
No zips, short, very small pockets. Pretty substantial elasticated waist...which is fine for my husband 'cos he's one of those lean wiry types and has a 32" waist still, but it would not suit Son1 who is built like a rugby player. demographic on t'other side said he'd cut out the elastic and will thread through a draw cord, he also said that the cuff elastics were a tad neat for him too....again fine for Himself.

It is not windproof, which makes me a little concerned about waterproof, but sure enough the cotton swelled up and it seems to be showerproof, so, until he gets caught in a downpour we're uncertain.

For what I paid, it's a fair enough jacket for his daily rambles, especially since he can get a wool pullover on underneath it.

Is it ventile as we know it ? No, it's not fine tight woven British ventile which is pretty much the gold standard.
Is it a comfortable jacket for scruffing around ? yes, it seems to be.....so long as you don't mind really small pockets and a kind of short jacket.
It's just below pullover length on Himself.

And?

I didn’t get one, but wondered on sizing. And have you tested it yet?
I got one. Small size as I'm thin, and it's big enough. Tiny pockets and permanently elastic waist are a drawback as far as I'm concerned, but it seems well enough put together and fine for rough wear. Can't complain for £20 odd.

That's what I thought from the pictures. The weave looked too open. But you can't really tell from pictures so I just swiped on it. But, it sounds like it has virtues, after all

I’ve taken to wearing my ventile snowsled smock again recently. Ideal for the allotment as it’s so sturdy. Looks well weathered in with the blue having grey highlights! The elastic in the cuffs is not so elastic now either.

I’m still running a refurbed Keela. Got the pockets fixed and cuffs clad in thin leather. It’s been a long time since I’ve had hours out in the rain in it, but it‘s certainly ok for a good walk. I get that pleasant glowy feeling deciding between the Ventile or the Paramo that day, like you get with UKPK, Urban, Real Steel, AG Russell, Victorinox knives, or which strap to put on a watch. 🤗

I nearly threw out my old wax jacket last week. Tried it on, decided I still liked it, it still felt 'right', so I hung it out in the sunshine for a bit and then put it by again.

I know, rotten pic. Himself said, "Stand still !, and we might actually get a photo of you!"....but something caught my eye, so I looked, even though I did stand still !
I've got three jumpers on under that jacket :) We'd been frozen solid for weeks that Winter.
