Just driven home from the hospital. My bother was taken in again this morning, by ambulance this time since he couldn't get breath enough to climb into his pal's landrover. Anyway, he's on oxygen and drips and stuff, but we came home and end house (we live the other end of the block of three) has this enormous spider web draped from the bedroom window right over to the footpath. Big spider on it.
Cool, but, it's not Hallowe'en for weeks yet. This is getting to be like Christmas in September at this rate
Totally spoils the excitement of it being one night of mischief and dark and outside to play and well, showing my age here, dookin' for apples, lanterns, guisin' and toffee apples and treacle scones and party pieces and bags of nuts and sweets.
Now it's demands and the whole damned country on a sugar rush.
It's lost it's joy.

Local shop had toffee apples for sale yesterday. I take your point though Mary and won’t post my usual Santa cartoon until at least the second week of December.

Hope your brother responds to treatment and recovers soon.

Thank you :)

He is, well, he's floored with this. Third time he's been hospitalised in the last six weeks. It's not getting better. Something needs to change, but that's up to him and his Doctors.
We'll hope, and we'll see.

I think dragging out the day makes it lose it's delight, it's true excitement. Same thing with MayDay, or bonfire night. It's one day, one night. Christmas was twelve days, the New year was hogmanay and ne'er day.....and now they're run into a month (+ earlier shops full of stuff) of glutinous gimmicky waste.

I thoroughly enjoy every change of season, and the rites thereof, but to make the entirety of Winter into Christmas time is pretty grim.
Now Hallowe'en looks like it's going to be the entirety of October

I know, I'm getting old.

Every old festival has been hijacked by greedy corporations. I would love to see a total ban on promotional advertising.

I've never had a toffee apple, they sound disgusting, can anyone comment?

I loved them. Crispy sweet toffee and a juicy apple :)
Folks dipped the apple on the stick in the pan of hot toffee and lifted it out to sit on it's end.....sometimes you got a huge thick puddle of toffee around your apple. I wasn't so keen on that hard thing, I liked the thin crispy layer and the apple.

I've given up on Halloween costumes. Every year the local kids used to visit, get their sweets, have their costumes admired. compliment us on ours and go off happily. Covid-19 seemed to have killed the tradition, no one came and we stopped dressing up. Then last year some kids did turn up and I answered the door as my usual self. They all ran away screaming.
