Had none tonight but was visited by two charming young ladies at the weekend. Assuming they were trick or treating, I offered sweets. Turned out they were collecting for the poppy appeal. Sorted out with laughter but I think they thought I was a confused old fart.

Seriously, was heartened to note that young people are willing to turn out in the rain to actively support such a worthy cause. I'm optimistic about the young.

I hate the waiting around, the uncertainty, etc., of the guisers calling. So, I did a pre-emptive strike and handed in bags of stuff (found glow in the dark snap bracelets, sweeties, etc.,) to the Mum's of some of the kids in the street. Folks whose Grannies were at school with me.....and called it done. We just didn't put out any ornaments to hint that we were doing Hallowe'en and had a peaceful evening instead.

The skies are already lit up with fireworks though.

Just before nine I answered the doorbell to two lads in their teens, barely any attempt at Halloween dress. They were soaked right through and the rain was at it's torrential best. Gave the poor buggers a fiver and told them to get a bottle of Frosty Jack and dry off in a bus shelter. I felt they deserved better than two lollipops and a bag of Malteesers. Probably have their parents round with the old bill tomorrow.
